Spectrophotometer, spectrometer or photometer: what does your laboratory need?
Spectrophotometer, spectrometer or photometer: what does your laboratory need?

These instruments are often perceived as interchangeable, but in practice they cover different analysis scenarios. This is why it is important for laboratories to understand not only the names, but also the actual analytical problem that needs to be solved.

For routine quality control, a photometer may be sufficient, for broader analytical tasks a spectrophotometer is needed, and for complex research or specialized analytics, spectrometric solutions are already considered. An error in selection usually does not appear immediately, but after the process has started.

Therefore, the right path begins with a list of samples, control parameters, measurement frequency and accuracy requirements. Then the selection of the device becomes meaningful and economically justified.
